Tshwane gets community TV!!!

As from 1 June this year South Africa’s capital city, Tshwane, will have its own community TV station. A terrestrial platform, Tshwane Television (TTV) is in the same frequency band as SABC1, 2 and 3, covering 85% of the Tshwane region. The station plans to go omni-directional in the future so that its footprint will cover a lot more areas outside the city.

TTV is currently on air broadcasting a preview and teasers of what’s to come following the launch. It is positioned as a new urban and contemporary platform aimed at providing high quality programming that’s entertaining, informative and educational. The station is also committed to programmes of local relevance, talent and events coverage based on a pluralist approach enabling broad programme coverage.
“Our strategy is to create a modern brand that people would want to associate with,” says creative director David Phume. “We have also gone to great lengths to produce on-air imaging and branding that is impactful, eye-catching and of high quality. This is the standard we have set as we believe our viewers deserve a good quality television experience.

“The schedule has been designed to keep our viewers entertained and it is in line with our brand placement strategy. To kick off, our normal daily schedule consists of these genres – news, lifestyle, kids, soapies, factual, educational, drama series, documentary, movies and local programming.”
TTV has been in development for a year. Following disruptions caused by trial and error it has since been under the management and support of Zallywood Pty Ltd, which consists of several subsidiaries that are key in broadcast, television and media.

“Our primary mandate is to provide and create opportunities within the greater community of Tshwane through skills development in media and television. The station is in the process of developing workshops and auditions which will take place at the Tshwane events centre,” concludes Phume.

Rwandan peace activist at Ezra screening

The Wits University based Origins Centre will screen the film ‘Ezra’ on Sunday, 22 May 2011. Ezra is the first film to give an African perspective on the disturbing phenomenon of abducting child soldiers into the continent's recent civil wars. Ezra is structured around the week-long questioning of a 16 year old boy, Ezra, before a version of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, created in Sierra Leone in 2002 in the wake of its decade long civil war. This hearing is then inter-cut with chronological flashbacks to pivotal moments during Ezra's ten years in the rebel faction which made him who he is.  The jigsaw puzzle of what occurred is reconstructed through the testimonies of three witnesses: Ezra, an ex-combatant, his sister Onitcha, and Cynthia, Ezra's fellow ex-soldier. What is supposed to be reconciliation soon becomes a trial, as Onitcha chooses this as the arena to reveal a secret she has kept from her brother. (www.imdb.com) The film has been screened at film festivals around the world and has won a number of awards.

It will be introduced by Theogene Niwenshuti, a Rwandan peace activist, artist and teacher. Niwenshuti has over the past 15 years been involved in campaigns, conferences, workshops and festivals in Africa and Europe, interacting with youth and adults on issues of human rights and conflict resolution. Among his many achievements is a nomination for the Bishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellowship. Kidnapped by militias in 1994, Niwenshuti has experienced the direct horrors of political and ethnic conflicts in the Great Lakes and East African Regions - events which led him, to dedicate himself to peace activism.

Doors will open at 18h00 and the screening will take place at 18h30.
Entry fee is R50 for the general public and R40 for Wits University staff and students.

Naked News..

Sooooooooooooo...
if you have been keeping up with the news, you would know that ETV will one of these days broadcast Naked News, an international news programme screened after the late night movie at 10pm, featuring female presenters who are nude or strip during the bulletin.

Religious assemblies and protesters have begun opposing the show, saying it is infringing the broadcasting regulations and are obviously worried about their kids (who might have already seen naked women elsewhere before).

"A late-night news bulletin on e.tv that features nude women was not in contravention of broadcasting standards," the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of SA (BCCSA) said.
"It is within the watershed time for adult viewing and gives a verbal warning beforehand, as well as an age restriction of 18 with nudity that is shown throughout the show," BCCSA spokeswoman Shouneez Martin told Sapa. "We have also noted that when the show is viewed on DSTV, it falls within the 18 age restriction and can therefore be blocked by viewers if necessary...

But then we all know if there programme gets an OVERWHELMING number of viewers it wouldn't really be because people want to keep up with what is happening in the world... *JustSaying*

Q&A with Athol Fugard after The Bird Watchers previews

Tonight is the first of two preview performances of Athol Fugard’s The Bird Watchers, premièring at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town. After both the preview performances, on 10 and 11 May, Fugard will be on stage to answer questions from the audience about his latest play. Tonight’s Q&A session will be facilitated by Daniel Galloway, the Fugard Theatre’s general manager, and by author Justin Cartwright tomorrow night.
The Bird Watchers is Fugard’s latest world première to be staged on the Fugard Theatre stage from 10 May to 4 June. He dedicates his latest work to two defining friendships from his early years in theatre in South Africa, namely those with Barney Simon and Yvonne Bryceland.
The three friends in the play are the passionate Garth, played by Sean Taylor (a “rough-around the edges” playwright), Guy De Lancey as the gentle-mannered Lenny, (a director) and Dorothy Ann Gould flamboyant Rosalyn (an actress).
The Bird Watchers will be managed by the same creative team that delivered The Train Driver in 2010, which also saw the evergreen 79-year old Fugard direct a world-première of his own work in the theatre that carries his name. Lighting design is again by Mannie Manim, who has lit every one of Fugard’s plays, and costume and set design by Saul Radomsky.
Bookings, with reserved seating, for The Bird Watchers can be made on http://www.computicket.com/, or by phoning the Fugard Theatre Box Office on 021 461 4554.

There's still time to enter the Doritos Late Night VIP competition, and rub shoulders with the stars at the SAMAs on 20 and 21 May 2011.

The 17th annual MTN South African Music Awards will make its grand debut at Montecasino in Joburg, which will be turned into Music City for the weekend.

Doritos is offering five winners – who can each take three friends along for the party – the chance to walk the yellow carpet in style at the music industry’s most glittering annual event, accompanied by a top local celebrity.

You and your friends will be given the full VIP treatment – Doritos will pay for you to travel from anywhere in South Africa to attend the SAMAs, and you’ll receive two nights’ luxury accommodation at the Sun Square Hotel in Montecasino, as well as tickets to the Friday and Saturday night award ceremonies and to selected official after-parties.

In addition, you’ll be swanning around with a hot celebrity at the SAMAs – either hip-hop act Teargas, comedian Chris Forrest, SABC1’s Live presenter Minenhle Dlamini , Vuzu’s V-Entertainment presenter Lalla Hirayama, or musician Jax Panik.

Fans may enter only once and select one of the celebrities, and then invite up to three friends – who may also enter the competition in their own capacity to increase everyone’s chances of winning.

“This is just another way in which Doritos pioneers living it up in style with some of our lucky consumers!” says Nthabiseng Hlophe from Doritos South Africa. “It’s sure to be a fun weekend of great vibes, good friends, Doritos Late Night snacking and hobnobbing with the who’s who of the entertainment industry.”

Be sure to go online and register soon – the draw for this scintillating prize takes place on Friday, 13 May.

In addition to this fabulous prize, Doritos fans can also win cold, hard cash – there are three prizes of R500 and limited-edition Doritos T-shirts up for grabs every week, until 16 May.

Every week, Doritos will ask fans a question, the answer to which can be found on any pack of Doritos Late Night Chilli Ribs Flavour corn chips. Entrants with the correct answer will go into a weekly lucky draw and stand a chance of winning R500 and a limited-edition Doritos Late Night T-shirt. The draw takes place every Monday, and the three weekly winners’ names will be announced on the online platforms.

All you need to do to enter both competitions is to visit the Doritos Facebook page (www.facebook.com/DoritosSouthAfrica), the Doritos mobisite (www.DoritosVIP.mobi) or the MXit mobile application. You can also find out more information on www.doritos-sa.co.za. So get munching – and prepare to meet your music idols at the glittering SAMAs!
