Grammy award-winning US gospel musician, Israel Houghton, is looking for local gospel stars.
The veteran muso will be in South Africa next week to conduct auditions for his New Breed Africa programme.
He will start in Cape Town at Radisson Blu on 7 June, before heading to Coastlands Hotel in Durban on 8 June. The auditions will end in Johannesburg at the Pyramid Convention Centre on 9 June.
“Our focus is on championing the next generation of leaders in music, arts, culture and digital technology, to form a team that truly represents the heart, sound, culture and spirit of South Africa – the nation I deeply love,” says Houghton.
Houghton, who has performed in South Africa before, says the auditions will be filmed with the view of creating a reality programme on the making of the band.
“We want to empower, educate, train, challenge, and encourage musicians and singers alike to be part of something bigger than themselves. Our basic core values consist of a love for God and a heart to serve others in need and therefore are looking for people who possess a matched quality and passion for this as it will reflect in our music presentation,” he adds.
Based in Houston, Texas, Houghton is known for his cross-cultural style of music that fuses gospel, jazz and rock. He released his debut album in 1997 and has won numerous awards, including six Dove Awards and four Grammy Awards.
The auditions will start at 8am on each day.
