SABC 1 brings back 'So You Think You Can Dance' Season 3

Mzansi’s favourite dance show, So You Think You Can Dance, is coming back in its 3^rd season starting on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho on Saturday 17 August 2013, at 18h30. So You Think You Can Dance is a reality dance competition that is now in its 3^rd season on SABC1. The sensational reality dance show kick started with a series of exciting country-wide auditions held in Durban on July 13^th (BAT Centre); Cape Town on the 20^th (Academy of Performing Arts), and the final auditions in Johannesburg on the weekend of 28 & 29 July (UJ Arts). 

The stunning Sinazo Yolwa (The Link) has been confirmed as the host.

35 contestants are selected by the judging panel, to attend call back auditions in Johannesburg where they are given the opportunity to work with choreographers, learn different dance styles and perform these dances to stay in the competition. 16 contestants are then chosen during this phase to take part in the live performance shows of the competition, where they will compete as pairs but also as individuals for the title of South Africa’s most talented dancer.

 

 

The next phase of the show consists of performance and results shows. The top 16 contestants are randomly paired up and select a dance style which they will perform in front of a live audience and the judging panel. Choreographers from different dance disciplines are at their disposal for the duration of the training week. After the performance show viewers have an opportunity to vote for their favourite dancer and the results are announced during the result show.   

How the show works

• The live shows start airing on Saturday 17 August 2013, at 18h30.
• The first 3 shows will capture the excitement of the regional auditions.
• Every Saturday evening will see eight dance couples (16 contestants) compete in a variety of dance styles – ballroom; ballet; salsa; hip-hop – and viewers will be given an opportunity to vote via sms for their favourite dancers.
• The Result Show will broadcast every Monday at 19h00 - starting on the 23^rd September 2013. The voting results will see the elimination of 2 dancers (1 male & 1 female) every week by the judging panel.
• The top 4 will compete in pairs as well as individually until the winner is chosen – to walk away with the title and the grand prize (R250 000 in cash)

Rand Show 2013 set to be another knock-out!!!

Easter isn't only synonymous with the Easter Bunny. If it's Easter in Gauteng, you know it's Rand Show time, SA's biggest and most-entertaining family-friendly expo.

Each year, the Rand Show commits to bringing visitors fun, exciting, and exclusive entertainment, and this year is no different. New and exclusive to the Rand Show 2013 is "Snow World", a magical winter wonderland complete with a 40m real-snow ski ramp, a solid-ice toboggan slide, and snow-covered Alpine village setting.

 

Anyone who loves cars is in for a treat at the Rand Show's Festival of Motoring, which will showcase over 150 muscle cars, racing cars, off-road racing machines, classics, and dragsters.  There's also the extreme motoring stunt extravaganza, "Atomic Junkies". Daredevil drifting superstars, Jim McFarlane and Mikey Skelton, present this motoring spectacular of extreme sports, with drifting, freestyle motocross and rally stunt sequences. They'll also be offering visitors a chance to experience a "suicide ride" on the full drifting track, guaranteeing a ride that's faster and even more hair-raising than usual.
 

 

There'll be more extreme stunts in the popular "Man vs Machine", an extreme bike show which pits the pedal power of five-times national trials bike champion, Dylan Victor, against the petrol power of multiple national champion and motorcycle trials legend, Brian Capper. 
 

 

 

The International Auto Sound Challenge Association (IASCA) of South Africa is back with its ear-splitting car-sound and performance challenges, giving visitors a real display of souped-up car performance.

Catch four free circus performances each day, and see lionesses, elephants, and acts of daring by stunt rider, Eldavido, in the Globe of Death. There's more animal action when Snake Bite Jones returns with his enthralling snake and reptile shows. There'll also be plenty of feathery flying at the Free-flight Bird Show, where vultures, Harris hawks, owls and even a channel-billed toucan will delight the crowds.

The Rand Show kicks off on Thursday 28 March, and runs for five days to Monday, 1 April 2013. Gates open each day at 9am and close at 6pm, although the show will remain open until 7pm. Tickets: R100 for adults, R50 for pensioners over 65, R50 for teens aged 13-16, R20 for kids aged 6 to 12, and FREE for children under six. Tickets are available at the gates or through Computicket.

Khumbul'ekhaya back with a BANG...

Khumbul’ekhaya returns to the small screen complete with a new refreshed look!

Starting Wednesday 13^th February 2013, at 21h00, Mzansi Fo Sho viewers will be introduced to a totally revamped Khumbul’ekhaya! The popular social reality series returns to the small screen featuring an exciting brand new look and feel! 

This season of Khumbul’ekhaya will see presenter, Andile Gaelesiwe, located in a new set and playing host to guests in-studio.

The off-screen activities of the show, including the search process for missing people and follow-up work done by social welfare officers, will be shared with the viewers via mobile and a dedicated show’s website amongst other social media platforms. All these changes will not affect the content of the show as it will continue to tell remarkable Mzansi stories of families as they set out on a quest to re-unite and bring healing.

Radio and TV personality Anele Mdoda strides into Parliament’s inner sanctum; its National Assembly, as Parliament prepares to present its annual red carpet, full honors ceremony known as the State of the Nation Address (SoNA).

Invited in, no less, by the very ones who are calling the nation to Order: Mr.  Max Sisulu Speaker of the National Assembly, and Mr. Mninwa Mahlangu, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces.

And that is not all, the head of parliamentary protocol Alexander Stander, parliamentary spokesperson, Luzuko Jacobs, GCIS’s Liezil Cerf, and the carriers of the parliamentary symbols, Regina Mhlomi and Vincent Shabalala reveal the behind the scenes stories of this national event. Nik Rabinowitz swings by too and all of that before Anele gets Jesse Duarte on the phone for a little girl talk.

SA Arts Journalism Awards

The National Arts Festival and Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) are calling for entries to the South African Arts Journalism Awards. The awards will be presented for the first time in 2013.

Festival CEO Tony Lankester says: “The awards will recognise journalistic practice across all media platforms - print, online and broadcast.” He added that the arts sector “needs robust, healthy, insightful and articulate commentary and criticism from the media to keep it moving forward”.

The awards will identify excellence, expertise and creativity. In doing so, they will promote the practice of arts and cultural journalism, strengthen its national profile and celebrate its importance, range, diversity, fluidity and vitality.

Gold and Silver awards will be made in the following categories:

- Reviewing
Reviews of theatre, music, visual/plastic arts, dance, literature, film, comedy or any other arts and culture phenomenon.

- Features
These may include interviews and profiles, behind-the-scenes stories, arts-related investigative journalism or other forms of arts and culture reportage in any medium.

- Opinion pieces
Comment, analysis and provocation – in any medium – relating to specific artistic disciplines, the arts sector more broadly or arts-related policy and business stories.

Professor Chris Thurman has been invited by the organisers to convene an independent panel of judges who, apart from the above categories, may also choose to nominate recipients for the following awards:

- Best New Voice

- Special Contribution to Arts Journalism

- Best New Media Exponent

- Arts Photography

- Special Merit Award

Winners will be announced during the course of this year’s National Arts Festival and a range of cash prizes will be awarded. Additionally, one journalist will be awarded the opportunity to travel to the vibrant Amsterdam Fringe in September, from where they will report on South African productions being presented at that Festival as part of the World Fringe Alliance showcase.

Idols SA auditions kick off in Cape Town this weekend

It's that time of the year boys and girls... M-Net and Mzansi Magic, co-producers of Idols SA Season 9, are reminding Cape Town singers not to miss the chance of becoming South Africa's next shining superstar. The Cape Town auditions are taking place this week Saturday, 2 February at the Grandwest Entertainment World. And if my memory serves me well... Cape Town never disappoints when it comes to talent.

Even the Idols SA spokesperson, Lani Lombard agrees: "We can't wait to see what the Cape Town queues will deliver, The Mother City has produced the most Idols singers to date, but last year Cape Town's reputation got a bit of a knock when only one singer made it to the Top 10. We're challenging Cape Town to regain their status as the country's Idols capital. You will only know if your material can make it all the way to the top if you take that first step … to the audition venue!"

South African citizens between the ages of 16 and 30 (on the day of their audition) are eligible to enter Idols SA Season 9. Those younger than 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian and all contestants will be asked to present their ID documents at the registration, which will take place on the day of auditioning. Musical instruments will again be allowed in the audition room.

But how do you ensure that you stand out from the crowd? Idols SA Executive Producer and Director, Gavin Wratten, shares some tips: "Think about why you buy a CD or download a song, something about that artist connects with you and it’s normally a combination of looks, attitude and voice. Make sure you're prepared; forget about the judges; and just give it your all."

Singers are also advised to bring along water and food, as the wait can be long and tiring.

ONE GOSPEL GOES CLASSIC...

ONE Gospel brings you a chance to grab the best seat in the house at some of the the most legendary Gospel concerts of the last decade.

DStv channel 331 is launching a new music hour from 29 January at 14:00 called Classic Concerts. Each slot will feature performances from Gospel artists that are as memorable as they are timeless.

Classic Concerts to look out for this February include the Chicago Mass Choir (29 Jan), Alvin Slaughter (5 Feb), Byron Cage (12 Feb).
