The 1st Atlas Studios Film Fest





The 1st Atlas Studios Film Fest on Saturday, the 31st of August forms part of Joburg City Festival. Popular and powerful films - both fiction and documentaries - shot in Johannesburg, by Joburgers telling Joburg stories will be shown throughout the day. The general public as well as aspiring filmmakers can mingle with people in the industry, attend master classes and engage with directors of the featured movies. There will also be a market, DJs playing and drinks and food for sale.

ONE Gospel Inspired Lyric Competition





ONE Gospel, channel 331 DStv, is launching the Inspired Lyric Competition starting on the 1st of September until November 2013. The competition is aimed at providing a platform for songwriters across the African Continent. ONE Gospel is inviting lyricists from across the continent to write and submit their work. From these entries the 3 top lyrics will be chosen. The three finalists will have their songs put to music and performed by Mahalia Buchanan, LoyisoBala and Solly Mahlangu. These three songs will be released as music videos on ONE Gospel and as singles across various Christian radio stations as part of our 6thBirthday celebrations on the 1st of November.

Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite of the three songs and a final winner will be announced at the end of November 2013. The winner of the competition will receive a further R10, 000.00 cash prize, and the two runners up will receive a R5000.00 cash prize. Loyiso Bala who will be performing one of the songs commented: "Gospel music is not a genre but rather the message within a genre. Lyrical content is the most important aspect of creating a gospel song. I am really honoured to be involved in this project because it is not about us finding the best gospel singer, but the real star behind a successful song; the lyricist".

Mahalia Buchanan
Through 1 September – 30 September 2013, anybody aged 18 years and older, who would like to put their song writing skills into action, must submit their lyrics via the email to info@onegospel.co.za. The aim of the channel is to contribute to the development of gospel music and promote it amongst various nations throughout the world. The channel gives exposure to artists producing gospel music, and this competition givesthe people behind the music a chance to showcase their talent, and this will inspire other upcoming songwriters to share their talent with the music industry

ONE Gospel is a 24 hour Christian music channel, in-between, with over a million viewers in South Africa alone. The channel also broadcasts to the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa, East Africa and much of West Africa. The channel has been broadcasting since November 2007 and can be found on any DStv decoder by tuning into Channel 331

Mandela Sports & Culture Day Line-Up Announced


Award-winning artists including Zahara, Toya Delazy, Mafikizolo, DJ CNDO, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Salif Keita and the Mahotella Queens will be part of the line-up at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sports and Culture Day at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. Other artists include David Jenkins, the Mahotella Queens, Umoja, Gcina Mhlophe, DJ Alessandro, Wouter Kellerman, Naima Mclean, Elvis Blue and 1st Project, and Kurt Darren.

Announcing the lineup on Monday, Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile called on South Africans to continue to celebrate Mandela's life "in order to re-commit ourselves to the ideals he dedicated all his life towards achieving.  Mandela, who turned 95 on 18 July, is making a "slow but steady improvement" in hospital in Pretoria, where he was admitted over two months ago with a recurring lung infection, although he remains in a critical condition, the Presidency said.  

The day will begin on Saturday with a football match between the South African Masters against the Italian Masters at 11am, followed by an international friendly between Bafana Bafana and Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) runners-up Burkina Faso at 1:30pm.

The Springboks will then tackle Argentina in the opening match of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, kicking off at 5pm. Former Bafana Bafana captain and captain of The Legends, Lucas Radebe, said he was looking forward to the soccer match. "Music and football play a great role in unifying the country. As a country, we are lucky to have Mandela with us as our icon," Radebe added. 

 Tickets for the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day are on sale at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets across South Africa. The proceeds will go towards building the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.

SABC 1 brings back 'So You Think You Can Dance' Season 3


Mzansi’s favourite dance show, So You Think You Can Dance, is coming back in its 3rd season starting on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho on Saturday 17 August 2013, at 18h30. So You Think You Can Dance is a reality dance competition that is now in its 3rd season on SABC1. The sensational reality dance show kick started with a series of exciting country-wide auditions held in Durban on July 13th (BAT Centre); Cape Town on the 20th (Academy of Performing Arts), and the final auditions in Johannesburg on the weekend of 28 & 29 July (UJ Arts). 


The stunning Sinazo Yolwa (The Link) has been confirmed as the host.

35 contestants are selected by the judging panel, to attend call back auditions in Johannesburg where they are given the opportunity to work with choreographers, learn different dance styles and perform these dances to stay in the competition. 16 contestants are then chosen during this phase to take part in the live performance shows of the competition, where they will compete as pairs but also as individuals for the title of South Africa’s most talented dancer.

The next phase of the show consists of performance and results shows. The top 16 contestants are randomly paired up and select a dance style which they will perform in front of a live audience and the judging panel. Choreographers from different dance disciplines are at their disposal for the duration of the training week. After the performance show viewers have an opportunity to vote for their favourite dancer and the results are announced during the result show.   

How the show works

  • The live shows start airing on Saturday 17 August 2013, at 18h30.
  • The first 3 shows will capture the excitement of the regional auditions.
  • Every Saturday evening will see eight dance couples (16 contestants) compete in a variety of dance styles – ballroom; ballet; salsa; hip-hop – and viewers will be given an opportunity to vote via sms for their favourite dancers.
  • The Result Show will broadcast every Monday at 19h00 - starting on the 23rd September 2013. The voting results will see the elimination of 2 dancers (1 male & 1 female) every week by the judging panel.
  • The top 4 will compete in pairs as well as individually until the winner is chosen – to walk away with the title and the grand prize (R250 000 in cash)
